The Plugin Site Releases ContrastMaster - Photoshop Plugin
August 07, 2008
The Plugin Site is proud to announce the release of ContrastMaster for Windows, a new product in the PhotoWiz series. ContrastMaster is a plugin for effective contrast enhancement as well as creating dramatic contrast looks, photorealistic paintings and HDR-like effects. It can turn low-contrast photos into vivid and detailed images and transforms ordinary photos into interesting and dynamic shots.
ContrastMaster works with dozens of graphics applications including Photoshop, Paint Shop Pro, Photoshop Elements, Photo-Paint, IrfanView and PhotoImpact under Windows. For accelerated rendering it supports hyperthreading as well as multiple processors and cores. ContrastMaster works with 8bit and 16bit RGB images.
Overview
ContrastMaster offers three local and four global contrast adjustment methods as well as various masking, saturation and brightness options. The three local adjustment methods allow you to dramatically improve contrast in small image details without blowing out highlights or damaging the image. You can apply these three methods separately or use various options to mix them together for even better results.
The four global methods (S/H-Contrast, Stretch, Equalize and Polarize) work on the tonal range of the image and help to improve the result even further. There is also an option for changing the brightness of the image. The masking options let you conveniently remove the ContrastMaster effect from an image area where you do not want to have it applied, e.g. skin areas, a blue sky or a wall. This can be done with the help of shadow/highlight and color masking options. Additionally, a saturation mask feature lets you improve saturation without oversaturating the image.
Sophisticated Algorithms
ContrastMaster offers three sophisticated methods for enhancing contrast in small image details. They are called Dynamic, Adaptive and Local. In fact, these three methods utilize five algorithms in total, because the dynamic and adaptive methods each use another algorithm for certain control settings. Each of these algorithms adjusts the contrast of image details in its own special way, which makes ContrastMaster useful for different types of images and allows you to produce a variety of effects and looks.
Each of the three methods lets you adjust the size of the image details that are affected, the effect intensity and the way the contrast is adjusted.
Additionally, the Dynamic Contrast methods lets you avoid artifacts or noise without lowering the effect intensity, the Adaptive Contrast methods automatically adjusts image details of different size at the same time, and the Local Contrast methods lets you independently increase and decrease the contrast in image details as well as influence the brightness character of the effect. Each of the three methods also offers special shadow/highlight adjustment options as part of the algorithm.
For Beginners as well as Experts
ContrastMaster offers six modes from the simple Novice mode to the sophisticated Expert Mode. Whereas Novice and Expert mode let you apply all contrast effects at the same time, the remaining four modes let you apply each of the three local effects and all the global effects individually. Moving the mouse over a control displays a detailed explanation in the Help box, so you don't need to read the manual before using ContrastMaster.
Each of the seven tab sheets offers a button menu with various local presets for quickly applying useful settings. Furthermore, there is a global preset feature that allows you to save and reuse useful settings later. Several global presets are already delivered with ContrastMaster. There is a FX Values check box on the Prefs tab for using strong instead of medium effect intensities as the defaults.
That way people who mainly want to produce special effects with ContrastMaster do not need to readjust sliders all of the time. ContrastMaster also lets you adjust up to three different effect settings at the same time and switch between them by using the Preview tab sheets, so you can experiment with different effect settings and conveniently compare them without leaving the ContrastMaster dialog.

Why ContrastMaster Is Different
There is no other tool available that offers as many methods for contrast adjustment as ContrastMaster. ContrastMaster is not only more effective at squeezing image details and contrast out of photos than most other tools, it also offers more options for fine-tuning and controlling image contrast than any other tool. Additionally, the Adaptive Contrast method is not available in any other software.
You can also use ContrastMaster to give a single photo the look of a HDR image while avoiding the overhead of HDR photography. With its masking options you often do not need to create selections or layer mask for selectively applying the ContrastMaster effect, which saves you a lot of time. ContrastMaster also offers special features that are not found in most other tools, e.g. spilt views, logged settings, 17 histogram types, own defaults, blown highlights detection, rendering time estimation, novice/expert modes, local presets and preview tab sheets.
Availability & System Requirements
ContrastMaster is available for Windows. A Macintosh version is planned for the end of the year. ContrastMaster sells at $69.95 (Regular License) or $39.95 (Academic/Educational License). It can be purchased at The Plugin Site. A demo version can be downloaded at the same URL.

Classroom in a Book offers what no other book or training program does - an official training series from Adobe, developed with the support of Adobe product experts.
The lessons in Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Classroom In A Book cover the basics of learning Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, Adobe’s toolbox for professional photographer's, which provides one easy application for managing, adjusting, and presenting large volumes of digital photographs. Countless tips and techniques, extra-credit exercises, and mini-tutorials help you become more productive and adept using Adobe Photoshop Lightroom. Follow the book from start to finish, or choose only those lessons that interest you.
Two Free Sample Chapters
Here are a couple of free sample chapters from the Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Classroom In A Book.
Applying Basic Color Corrections in Lightroom 2
Lightroom 2 offers some handy features that allow you to adjust image color in a variety of ways. In this exercise, the Adobe Creative Team demonstrates two of the most important color corrections for any photographer: adjusting whites and tonal ranges, and improving brightness/contrast ratios.
Reviewing and Organizing Images in Lightroom 2
Lightroom 2 delivers numerous tools to make finding and organizing your files intuitive and enjoyable. The Adobe Creative Team shows how you can view an impromptu slideshow, create collections, and compare images side by side, so you can make the best use of your image library as it continues to grow.
When you work with many images in Lightroom, you need to be able to find exactly what you want, and quickly. You've already started structuring your catalog if you've applied keyword tags to images you imported. Keyword tags enable you to find or group image files based on descriptions you associate with them, independent of how they're named or where they're stored. You also should make a habit of going through a few cycles of reviewing and organizing your files each time you import new images. The features described in this article simplify the reviewing process and help you to get (and stay) organized.

Backboard - Online Feedback Management For Design Projects
August 06, 2008
Backboard is a simple, lightweight utility that allows you to get
feedback on documents, images and web pages. You don't need an account, just
upload your document and you'll be set up with a Backboard at a dedicated URL.
Decide which
colleagues and friends you would like feedback from, and Backboard will send your URL to those
people with an invitation to leave feedback. Along with support for all common
document and image formats, Backboard also allows users to request feedback on any
website.
To find out more details we did a quick interview with Kimber Lockhart, the
CEO of Increo Solutions, which is the company behind this software. So here's the inside scoop on Backboard!
What was the inspiration behind it?
Backboard was created to make it easy to get feedback from a group on documents. It’s a simple concept, yet it solves a problem we’ve all had -- reconciling several emails with feedback, sorting out comments and corrections and distributing the next draft. In fact the original inspiration behind the product was a logo design -- frustrated with too many emails and versions floating around, we decided to build a better tool.
Who are the people behind this?
Backboard is produced by Silicon Valley, CA-based Increo Solutions. We produce easy-to-use software to support individuals and companies in the innovation process. Increo was founded in Spring 2007 by three then-Stanford students all of whom have since graduated. We were backed by venture firm Draper Fisher Jurvetson in Spring 2008.
How could this benefit people using Photoshop?
I can see Backboard being extremely useful to people using Photoshop. A Photoshop user might need feedback from a trusted group on an in-progress design. For example, this morning, I uploaded a .psd of a new business card design, shared the Backboard with my team, came back and had several comments.
My team had engaged in a discussion about my design and I had many new suggestions to implement. Benefits to Photoshop users include:
- Backboard supports .psd files -- many other sites require you convert your document before posting.
- Proofing is fast and easy -- just upload the file, choose the approval option, and import or enter email addresses. Stakeholders can then leave feedback and approve the document.
How is this an advantage over free file sharing sites, or flickr?
Backboard is focused on getting feedback on your work, so our feature set is different from what you will find on a file sharing site or Flickr.
- We have three security options so you can protect confidential documents, yet leave other documents open and request feedback from stakeholders that don't have Backboard accounts.
- Compatible with documents, PowerPoint presentations, most image formats, and websites.
- Don't need an account to use
- Ability to request approval of the document
- Once you've gotten feedback on a document, you can make changes and upload a new version. All Backboard participants are automatically notified and can come leave feedback on the changes.
How has the launch been?
It's going well so far. We have users in the US and Japan and have been honored on several CSS showcase sites for our innovative dark design (it highlights the documents).
What is in store for the future? What are your goals?
Most of Backboard's features were shaped by feedback from our users. We will continue to refine Backboard based on user input. Keep watch for some great features in the pipeline including even easier ways to create a Backboard.
Thanks
Kimber, and good luck with Backboard!
Visit Backboard and take a test drive.

Photoshop Lightroom Tips From Martin Evening
July 31, 2008
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 has been released for a few days now and some tips and tutroials are starting to show up. Here are some great tips for auto-masking in Lightroom from Martin Evening. They are extracts from his new book, The Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Book. This exceptional book describes Photoshop Lightroom’s features in detail from a photographer’s perspective.
As an established commercial and fashion photographer, Martin knows firsthand what photographers need for an efficient workflow. He’s also been working with Photoshop Lightroom from the beginning, monitoring the product’s development and providing feedback on the public beta. As a result, Martin knows the software inside and out, from image selection to image editing to image management. You can read the extracts at the LightroomNews.com site.
AUTO-MASKING IN LIGHTROOM 2
The true stars of Lighroom 2 are the localized adjustment tools. For the first time, photographers can now edit their raw files using the adjustment brush and gradient filter tools. These allow you to apply all kinds of adjustments such as: darkening, lightening, coloring or sharpening an image. The following extract is taken from my new book in which I show how to work with the adjustment brush and auto-masking feature.

Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 Released - Free Trial Download Also Available
July 29, 2008
Adobe today announced the immediate availability of Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 software, the photographer's essential toolbox for managing, adjusting and presenting large volumes of digital photographs. With new enhancements such as dual-monitor support, radical advances in non-destructive localized image correction, and streamlined search capabilities, Photoshop Lightroom 2 is a compelling upgrade that simplifies photography from shoot to finish.
As Adobe’s first application to support 64-bit for Mac OS X 10.5 Macintosh computers with Intel processors and Microsoft Windows Vista 64-bit operating systems, Lightroom 2 also provides improved memory performance for dealing with large scale images.
Photoshop Lightroom 2: Smarter, Faster and More Accurate
The enhanced Library module in Lightroom 2 helps streamline and accelerate photographers’ workflows. With the ability to visually organize images across multiple hard drives, Lightroom 2 and its powerful Library Filter Bar makes it easy for users to quickly find the images they need.
The Suggested Keywords feature helps photographers keyword their images by making intelligent suggestions based on their own previous efforts. New dual-monitor support allows users to expand their workspace, giving them flexibility to edit and organize images in a way that maximizes an additional display.
In the Develop module, the new Local Adjustment Brush lets photographers fine-tune specific areas of an image to precisely adjust color, exposure and tonal range without affecting other areas of the image.
The new Graduated Filter expands the toolbox in Lightroom, allowing for edits to larger areas by applying gradually diminishing or increasing adjustment effects such as exposure, clarity, and saturation, alone, or in any combination.
Lightroom 2 also helps photographers print more efficiently by quickly arranging photos of multiple sizes on one or many pages with flexible and customizable templates to maximize paper and ink.
Ground-Breaking Innovation in Raw Technology
New raw technology gives photographers access to flexible camera profiles. Camera profiles are the visual starting point for the raw processing workflow, but image preferences vary for every photographer. To minimize surprises, Adobe is supplying default camera profiles that closely emulate the visual looks that photographers are used to seeing from their favorite camera, while also providing the ability to create highly customized profiles to suit different tastes.
Pricing and Availability
Adobe Photoshop Lightroom 2 is available now through the Adobe Store in English, French and German with the Japanese language version planned to be released at a future date. The estimated street price is USD$299 for new users with an upgrade price of USD$99 for registered users of qualifying Lightroom customers.
Recommended system requirements are Macintosh OSX 10.4, 10.5 1 GHz PowerPC G4 or G5 or Intel based processor, or Microsoft Windows XP SP2 or Windows Vista Home Premium, Business, Ultimate, or Enterprise, Intel Pentium 4 processor, 1 GB RAM and a 1024x768 resolution screen.

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly
There often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.
Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.
Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.
Generate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.
Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
