Photoshop Forums Roundup
Imagine someone going out and finding interesting posts from the various Photoshop forums for you. Well that's exactly what Pierre, a mod at PhotoshopTechniques, does from time to time. Here's his latest report:
One of the must sees at the Adobe User to User forum is their FAQ: it lists some of the most current Photoshop problems and their cure.
At PhotoshopTechniques, see a discussion about toning pictures like Anton Corbijn's.
At PhotoshopGurus, check out this thread about creating a handwriting animation.
At the PhotoshopCafé, OmenGeorge has posted a stunning tutorial about futuristic orbs.
Utopian23, at TeamPhotoshop, shows us how to do gradients overlays.
At PurePhotoshop, there is a nice explanation about how to simulate cracked glass.
At PixelAddiction, see their Holidays contest, where you can win a NAPP membership.
At retouchPRO, members can submit tutorials, like this excellent one called "JPEG - Know Thine Enemy", where you can learn about the mechanics behind JPEG compression.
Several techniques to create a realistic wood engraving can be found at ozoneasylum.

Product Spotlight — Primatte Chromakey
Primatte 2.0 is a powerful chromakey compositing plugin for Photoshop that takes a foreground image of any resolution, shot against a single color, and replaces that color with transparent pixels. Read about the features and find links to video tutorials and demos.

Photoshop Tip — Straightening Scans In 10 Seconds (Or Less)
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIf you've scanned an image and it's crooked when you bring it into Photoshop, you can fix it in about 10 seconds flat. Just switch to the Measure tool (it lives behind the Eyedropper tool in the Toolbox) and drag it along the top edge of the image you want to straighten. That's the hard part (and that should give you an idea of how easy this technique is). Next, go under the image menu, under Rotate Canvas, and choose Arbitrary. Photoshop automatically enters the amount of rotation (courtesy of your earlier measurement), so all you have to do is click OK and bam! — the image is perfectly straightened.

More Good Bits From CreativeBits
Spotted 2 good tips from PS investigator extraordinaire Ivan Raszl at CreativeBits.

PS: Quick Grayscale Previews — When you're working on a full color image, but you want to know what it will look like in grayscale for use in a newspaper ad, you can get a quick "preview" of what it will look like by hitting Command (Apple key) + Shift + U [PC: Control + Shift + U]. This doesn't actually convert the image to grayscale, rather it simply desaturates the image. This will only work on single layer images, so if you have multiple layers, you'll have to flatten the image first.

He also has a piece about how to reduce low light noise with NeatImage, a Photoshop plug-in that does a great job of removing this kind of noise from your images.

Total Training for Adobe Photoshop 7 has been discounted to $49.99 at TotalTraining.com. On the front page, click on Closeout Specials — and you'll find it. The videos total 26 hours of training with Deke McClelland, author of The Photoshop Bible. Ok, so 50 dollars divided by 26 hours comes to... just under a $1.93 an hour. Sounds pretty good to me.

Photoshop Tip — Opacity Slider Speed Tip
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIf you're using the Opacity slider in the Layers palette, you can control this slider (which frankly is a bit awkward to control with your mouse) by using the Arrow keys on your keyboard. Here's how: Click on the right-facing triangle next to the Opacity field, then use the Left and Right Arrow keys to move 1% at a time. If you hold the Shift key, you'll move 10% at a clip.

Inspiration In Black & White — Jeff T. Alu
Adobe Photoshop Inspiration - Jeff AluWe first noticed Jeff T. Alu's mesmerizing work in File Magazine. The photo we are featuring — "Car" — is from Elemental Spaces, a selection of Alu's digital photos of the Southern California deserts. "This shot was taken at Bombay Beach," Alu told us, "on the Salton Sea, in Southern California. My idea for this shot was to have the soft sky/water contrast with the harsh land." Also make sure to read through his Dodge & Burn tutorial.

Photoshop Tip — Steal Color From Anywhere
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIn previous versions of Photoshop, you could click the Eyedropper tool on any color within your image, and it would steal that color and make it your new Foreground color. The only drawback was, you could only steal colors from within an open document window. Back in Photoshop 7.0, Adobe cut the Eyedropper tool loose from the chains that bound it, and now, as long as you click within an open image first, you can drag right out of your image window and sample a color from, well, anywhere. That includes sampling colors from other applications, Photoshop's own Toolbox and menu bars, and even your computer's desktop pattern. Just remember to click in your image first, and then drag that eyedropper to a new world of color delights that dare not speak its name.

Photoshop Tip — Undo A Save? That's Impossible, Isn't It?
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipThis is a great trick we learned from our buddy Mike Ninness, and the first time we saw it, we said, "Hey, wait a minute, that can't be." Oh, but it be. It's how to undo a Save. This is especially helpful after you've flattened an image, saved the file, then realized that you needed to change something on a layer. This only happens to us about every other day, and here's the keyboard shortcut to fix it: Option-Command-Z (PC: Alt-Control-Z). Press it a few times after you've flattened and saved, and look in your Layers palette to see all the layers come a-rumbling right back. Pretty slick stuff.

Photoshop Tip — Secret Opacity See-Through Part of a Layer Tip
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipThis is a pretty wild tip — how to make just one part of a layer have a lower opacity. We know it sounds impossible, but this is totally cool. Start by making a selection on any area of the layer that you want to become transparent, while the rest of the layer remains at 100%. Then go under the Edit menu and choose Fill. When the Fill dialog appears, from the Blend Mode pop-up menu choose Clear. Then lower the Opacity of the fill to whatever percentage you'd like, then click OK and voilá — part of your layer has opacity, while the rest remains at 100%. Majorly cool! (Note: You have to think in reverse here. Clear set to 100% Opacity will make the selected area completely transparent.) Wait, what if you decide that you want to "fill it back in"? Here's how: Just start making copies of your layer, and as you do, you'll see the transparency disappear. You may have to make five or more copies. When it looks right, hide all but those copied layers, and from the Layers palette's pop-down menu, choose Merge Visible.

Photoshop Tip — Applying Multiple Filters? Not On My Layer!
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipThinking of applying a number of different filters to a particular layer? Don't do it. Instead, make a copy of your layer, then apply the first filter. Make another copy of the layer and apply the second filter, make another copy, apply the third filter, and so on. You can use Photoshop's Layer Blend Modes to get the effect that one filter is applied on top of the others, and now you've got full control over each individual filter applied. If you don't like one of the filters just drag that layer into the Trash. Better yet, you've got Blend and Opacity control you wouldn't have by simply applying filter of filter.

Did You Know You Could Create An Entire Website In Photoshop?
SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites InstantlyThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, SiteGrinder turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, SiteGrinder is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks. Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download.
