Focus Magic 3 For Blur Reduction Released
[via graphics.com]

Acclaim Software has released version 3 of its solution for correcting out-of-focus blur and motion blur in photographs. Focus Magic runs as a Windows stand-alone application and as a plugin for Windows or Mac Phototshop-compatible applications, including Photoshop Elements.
Unsharp Mask (or Sharpen) filters increase the contrast at the edges of an image, while Focus Magic reverses the formula by which an image got blurred. This allows detail to be recovered, in contrast with Unsharp Mask, which does not recover detail but instead sharpens images that are only slightly blurred, making them look more grainy. Unsharp Mask also cannot correct motion blur.
The new version of Focus Magic includes dedicated algorithms to correct motion blur and is said to run four times faster than version 2.
Focus Magic can be purchased for $45 from the Focus Magic site, and a free trial version is available.

Photoshop Tip: Tough Selection Tip
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIf you're struggling to make a selection of an image that's against either a background of a similar color or a very busy background, here's a masking tip to make the process easier: Add a Levels or Curves Adjustment layer above your image layer, and use it to dramatically increase the contrast in the image to help make the edges stand out. This will often help make the difference between the object's edge and the background more obvious. The great part is, you can totally damage the look of the image because you're using an Adjustment layer. When your selection is in place, just drag the Adjustment layer into the Trash icon to delete it, and your image is back to normal, but you've got that "impossible" selection still in place.

Quark Releases PSD Import XTension For Photoshop Files

Photoshop Tip: Better Color-to-Grayscale Using Lab
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipConverting a color image to grayscale by choosing Grayscale from the Mode menu often produces some pretty flat-looking grayscale images. Rather than doing that, try one of our favorite tips for getting better grayscale images. Start with an RGB color scan, then go under the Image menu, under Mode, and choose Lab Color. Then go to the Channels palette. You'll see four channels. Drag the B channel to the Trash icon to delete it. Now, delete the channel called Alpha 2, leaving just Alpha 1 (which was the original Lightness channel). Now go under the Image menu, under Mode, and choose Grayscale. Go to the Layers palette and click on the Background layer. If your grayscale image appears too light, make a copy of the layer and change the Blend Mode to Multiply. If it appears too dark, lower your Multiply layer's Opacity until you dial in a perfect-looking grayscale image.

The Greatest Photo-Sharing Service Since The World Began
I've been exploring a great photo-sharing website called Flickr. I went there after reading some data on Flickr from Signal vs. Noise:

"The site has 182,000 members and is growing at 7% a week. There are 2.2 million photos there and that number’s growing at the rate of about 30,000 a day. 82 percent of the pictures on the site are publicly available to anyone."

They also have an interesting blog.

Photoshop Tip: Center That Guide
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIf you drag a guide from the ruler onto the page and you want to make sure it’s centered horizontally or vertically, try this: Press Command Option-; (PC: Control-Alt-;) to unlock the guides. If necessary make sure that only one guide is selected by deselecting every guide and then clicking on the guide you want centered. Then in the align palette (Window> Align), use that flyout menu to select Align to Artboard. Click on the Vertical Align Center icon (or Horizontal Align Center icon, depending on the direction of the guide).

Photoshop How-To: Using Adjustment Layers — "Being able to correct and edit images in Photoshop is a life-saver for most creative professionals. Photoshop Tip: Making Changes To Raw Photos Without Opening Them
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipThis is a pretty slick trick-editing Raw photos, without actually opening them in Photoshop, well, technically. Here's how it's done: Open the Raw digital camera image from within the File Browser, and it brings up the Camera Raw dialog. Make the tonal processing changes you want within the Camera Raw interface, but DON'T click OK. Instead, hold the Option key (PC: Alt key) and you'll see the OK button change into an Update button. Click on it (when it says Update) and Camera Raw will close, without the photo opening in Photoshop, but the changes you made will be visibly applied to the thumbnail in the File Browser. (Note: Like all changes in the Browser, they will not be applied until you actually open the photo in Photoshop.)

Inspiration From Marshall Sokoloff — "Three Sisters"
Three Sisters is a series of photographs by Marshall Sokoloff of three ships in Toronto. Marshall says: "These colorful ships were each unloaded over a period of a week. This slow unveiling of their spectacular hulls yielded a changing canvas of weathered ephemeral beauty. Photographed mostly in the dawn morning light, the colors dance with intensity in juxtaposition to the glassy calm water and clear blue sky."
One of the interesting aspects of these mysterious photos is that they remind me of Photoshop effects people strive for. And so it is nice to see a photo that looks Photoshopped but that in fact is not Photoshopped.

Photoshop Tip: Adding New Text Close to Existing Type
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipDid you ever try to add some new text a little to close to existing text, only to have the Type tool assume you want to edit the existing text? Seasonal Demands - Photoshop Snow Effects
Seasonal Demands - Photoshop Snow EffectsMake it snow, make it snow, make it snow! For people who are looking for ways to make snow in Photoshop, here are some ideas...
#1 — Go to Alien Skin Software and download the 30-day fully functional Eye Candy 5: Nature. You'll be able to do lots of crazy snow effects with Snow Drift, which piles snow on any object, selection or text and sprinkles surfaces with light snow. And there's also Icicles, which drips icy stalactites from any selection and glazes surfaces with realistic ice. By combining Icicles with Snow Drift, you can quickly winterize text or photos. Study some examples of Snow Drift and Icicles to get some ideas.
Seasonal Demands - Photoshop Snow Effects #2 — Read this article from creativepro.com - "I Only Have Ice for You" - which will show you how others have put snow and ice in their text.
#3 — Look for some online tutorials. Here are 5 good ones I found:
Make Snow On Text from Meye.dk. Simple and easy.
Winter Snow from Photoshop Galaxy. Also simple and easy.
Paint Realistic Snow from Wacom. This works even better if you have a tablet.
Snowflake Brush from Block9.net. They offer a free file you can use to create your own snowflake brush. Sweet.
Seasonal Demands - Photoshop Snow Effects Snow Globe from Escrappers.com. Not too difficult. And you can use the brush from above for the finishing touches.
Well, that's all the snow I can come up with for today, but I'll keep looking.

Photoshop Tip: Power Up Your Layer Styles
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipHere's a little-known tip for controlling the intensity of your Layers Styles. This is particularly helpful if you've applied a number of different Layer Styles to a layer, and want to affect them all at the same time, rather than tweaking each one individually. It's called "Scale Effects," and it's buried in the Layer menu, at the bottom of the Layer Style submenu.
Choose it, and a dialog appears with a slider set to 100% by default. As you increase the amount (up to 1000% maximum), it increases the "scale" of all your effects. For example, if you increased the scale of a Layer Style drop shadow, the shadow would become blurrier and its distance from the object would become greater. If you adjusted a Stroke Layer Style, the stroke would become thicker, etc. Pretty powerful stuff.

AKVIS Enhancer For Macintosh And Windows
Some photo details can be lost due to unevenness of exposure; faces may be cast in shadow, or scenery wiped out by overexposure. Merely manipulating the brightness and contrast of the whole frame with photo editing software can improve the problem in some portions of a photo, but might then spoil other areas that need different treatment. AKVIS Enhancer strengthens the difference between adjacent pixels having different color gradations and reveals details within shadowed, overexposed or mid-tone areas. Where other digital photo editing programs may achieve acceptable results by manipulating two to four shots of the same scene, AKVIS Enhancer applies advanced algorithms to a single shot for spectacular results. The plugin is compatible with Photoshop and Elements.

Photoshop Tip: Edit the Shape Of Letters
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIf you need to alter the shape of some text, try this: from the Layer menu, go to Type> Create Work Path. This will put a path around your type as if you drew it with the Pen tool. Then either hide or delete the type layer and make a new layer. Use the path editing tools (add anchor, delete anchor and Direct Select tools) to edit the shape of the text, while keeping smooth vector edges. When you’re done editing the path, fill it with a color.

Photoshop Tip: Can't Paint on a Layer? Here's Why
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipIf you try to use one of Photoshop's paint tools to paint on a layer but Photoshop gives you the international symbol for "no you are not!", it's probably caused by one of two reasons: (1)You're trying to paint on a type layer. Photoshop only allows one thing on type layers - type! If you need to paint on a type layer, you must first rasterize it (which converts it from an editable type layer to a regular image layer). (2) The other reason is probably that the layer has been "locked" for painting. Look up in the top of the layers palette and uncheck either the box that looks like a paintbrush or the one with the padlock (which Locks All).

Photoshop Type Tip: Change Font On All Linked Layers
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipHere's a time-saver. You're with a client (or a friend, or just all by yourself) and you suddenly realize that you've been trying different fonts on different layers, and now you're in Font Hell. Your first instinct is to go through the layers and start changing the type back to something more reasonable and consistent, like the same font. Here's a trick if you find yourself in this situation. Just link all your type layers together, then hold down the Shift key and select a font by name. And that's it - the type in all the linked layers will all change at once. That is sweet.

Canon 20D CSpro runs on Elements 1, 2, 3, Photoshop 6, 7 and Photoshop CS. Both Mac and PC versions are available.

Photoshop Tip: Can’t Decide On A Font?
Adobe Photoshop Blog - Photoshop TipHere’s a simple way to solve the “what font family to use” dilemma. With a type layer active, create a new action and use the arrow keys to scroll through all the fonts in your type menu in the Options bar, then stop recording. Now any time you want to try different looks, run the action and it will scroll through each typeface – for best results use the Actions palette pop-up menu to change the Playback options to Step by Step (with accelerated playback the fonts will change too fast to see the different looks).

Did You Know You Could Create An Entire Website In Photoshop?
SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites InstantlyThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, SiteGrinder turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, SiteGrinder is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks. Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download.
