Create A Skin Texture In Photoshop - Smooth Skin Technique - Photoshop Tutorial From Dave Seeram
February 28, 2009

Here is a skin texturing Photoshop technique from the latest edition of PhotographyBB Magazine Online.

Photoshop CS4"Faking" Skin Texture - Photoshop Tutorial By Dave Seeram
When retouching portraits, depending on the particular style of effect you are trying to achieve with your final image, you may need to get rid of a model’s natural skin texture entirely and, well... “fake it!”

Certain styles of portraiture require a smooth and almost surreal glowing quality to them, so just how can you achieve a natural looking skin texture in Photoshop? Jump in with me and let’s create some fake skin!

In this tutorial we are going to use this image of a model as shown here. Although the original image is quite nice, we are going to attempt to achieve a more smooth look to her skin by “faking” her skin texture.

Photoshop Elements 7 Tips, Tricks And Tutorials
February 27, 2009

Adobe Photoshop Elements 7Here are some tips and tricks and tutorials to help you work more efficiently in Photoshop Elements 7, all from Peachpit Press.

Why Won’t Photoshop Elements Do What I Tell It To Do?
Here's a list of explanations and solutions for common issues that might be blocking your progress in Adobe Photoshop Elements 7.

A Quick Tour of Photoshop Elements
If you're new to Photoshop Elements, this lesson will familiarize you with the Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 workspace and provide you with an overview of the tools and procedures you’ll use to capture and edit your digital images.

Getting Professional Results with Photoshop Elements and Your Inkjet Printer: Toning
Before digital photography, only black and white images could be chemically toned, but today toning can be applied to color images too. Tim Daly shows you how.

Sharing photos in e-mail
If you're new to Photoshop Elements, this lesson will familiarize you with the Adobe Photoshop Elements 7 workspace and provide you with an overview of the tools and procedures you’ll use to capture and edit your digital images.

Photoshop Elements 7 Tips, Tricks And TutorialsAutomatic Photo Backups
So what are you going to do with 20 GB (or more) of online storage at Photoshop.com? Photoshop Elements 7 introduces an extremely welcome new feature: Automatic online backups of your images.

Importing media
Bringing your digital files into Photoshop Elements is easy.

Photomerge Scene Cleaner
You’ve probably seen the photo on the Internet or forwarded via email from a friend: a couple in full wedding attire are exchanging vows on the beach, the ocean meeting the sky in the background, and...what’s that? Yes, a topless sunbather is walking into the frame, ruining an otherwise romantic wedding photo. In Elements 7, however, that photo would be easily salvageable.

Smart Brush
You could accomplish the same results as the Photomerge Scene Cleaner by hand-editing areas between images, but it would take up more time. In the same spirit, the new Smart Brush tool offers a collection of common editing tasks that can be applied simply by painting areas of your photos.

Adobe Photoshop CS4 Disable Canvas Rotation Via Trackpad Photoshop Plug-in Available As Free Download
February 25, 2009

Photoshop CS4 & Photoshop CS4 Extended Good news from John Nack: "During the CS4 development cycle, the Photoshop and Bridge teams worked closely with Apple* to support the multitouch gestures supported on MacBook Air and newer MacBook Pro systems. As a result you can zoom and rotate documents using three-finger combinations.

"The rub is that especially on the latest systems (with the enormous trackpads), it can be too easy to zoom or rotate accidentally. Unfortunately Photoshop doesn't ship with a preference that would govern the behavior. Therefore we've released an optional plug-in that will disable zooming and rotating via the keyboard if you'd like. Just drop it into your Plug-Ins folder, restart Photoshop, and you'll be set."

From the Adobe Page: "On MacBook Air and recent MacBook Pro systems, Adobe Photoshop CS4 can use a multitouch gesture to enable rotation of the document canvas. Some customers find that the canvas gets rotated accidentally through inadvertent use of the gesture on the trackpad.

"This plug-in disables the multitouch gesture for canvas rotation, as well as the gestures for zooming and flick panning. Canvas rotation remains available through the Rotate View tool, and Photoshop is otherwise unaffected by the plug-in."

Adobe Photoshop CS4 Updated - PhotoShop 11.0.1 - Fixes Slow Downs And Bugs - Download Now
February 25, 2009

Photoshop CS4 & Photoshop CS4 ExtendedThe Adobe Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 update (for MAC, for WINDOWS) addresses a number of issues discovered after Adobe Photoshop CS4 and Photoshop CS4 Extended (11.0) software were released. The most significant fixes in the Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 update include the following:

  • A number of issues that could cause slow performance have been addressed.
  • Pen barrel rotation with Wacom tablets now works correctly.
  • Photoshop now correctly recognizes 3D textures edited by a plug-in.
  • The quality of the results of Auto-Blend Layers (Stack Images) has been improved.
  • A problem that could result in a crash when pasting formatted text has been fixed.
  • A crash that could result from a corrupt font no longer occurs.

This updater will update only the retail version of Photoshop CS4 and not any prerelease (beta) versions. To confirm that the updater has run successfully, launch Photoshop and verify that the version number on the splash screen shows 11.0.1 and not 11.0. If it does not show 11.0.1, you may not have a retail version of Photoshop CS4.

Go to the Windows Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 Update page.
Go to the MAC Photoshop CS4 11.0.1 Update page.
You can also get the update by choosing Help--> Updates from within Photoshop.

Here's she is with the details: "I don't know about you, but the first time I ever used a set of abstract light brushes, I soon realized that I didn't know how to reproduce the glow effect required to use the brushes properly. I learned that all it takes is some playing around with the Gaussian blur setting and layer blends to achieve a great glowing effect. Photoshop Tips From Jay Nelson
February 20, 2009

Here's the latest collection of Photoshop tips by Jay Nelson, the editor-in-chief of Design Tools Monthly.

Save Multiple Clone Sources
Adobe added a mysterious feature to the Clone Source panel in Photoshop CS3 (Window> Clone Source). The icons at the top of the panel let you remember up to five sources in the current image for use with the Clone Stamp tool. To use them, click on one of the icons, then Option-click on your image. You can then recall that location later on by clicking the icon again - that location will become the source for the Clone Stamp tool!

Photoshop CS4 & Photoshop CS4 ExtendedGroup Photos into Stacks in Bridge
In Bridge, you can group similar photos into a Stack, to easily work with just those photos all at once. Just select the photos you want to group and then press Command-G to create the Stack. To expand the stack, press Command-Right Arrow. To collapse the stack, press Command-Left Arrow.

Option Key Resets Dialog Boxes
In dialog boxes in Adobe applications, holding down the Option key when pressing the Cancel button will change that button to Reset. This is useful when you're trying out effects, filters, image adjustments, etc., because you can instantly return to the document's state before you opened that dialog, without closing the dialog box.

Faster Digital Camera Transfers
The quickest way to get pictures from your digital camera into your computer is NOT by connecting the camera to the computer but by using a card reader. This is because when the camera is connected, the speed of the transfer is limited by the processor in the camera. When a card reader is connected, your Mac's processor and type of connection controls the speed. The fastest card readers use USB 2.0, FireWire, or the CardBus or ExpressCard slot on your laptop. For the absolute fastest transfers, see the speed tests at www.robgalbraith.com.

Refine Edge of Selections
Photoshop has several ways to adjust the edge of a selection for smoothness, size, feathering, etc. But in CS3, all these controls appear together in a helpful dialog: Select> Refine Edge... There, you can use sliders to adjust the Radius, Contrast, Smoothness, and Feathering of your selection, and also Contract or Expand it. But there are two features in this dialog that put it over the top: a set of icons that let you see your selection in different ways (selection border, quick mask, mask, image on white, or image on black background); and a helpful description, with examples, for every control in the dialog box. All together, this is incredibly helpful.

Adobe CS4 Student Editions Now Available - Photoshop CS4 Student Discount PricesBig Tips for Photoshop
Here are some can't-live-without-'em tips that can make an enormous difference to your work in Photoshop. These are the ones I use every other minute in Photoshop.

When working with any of the painting or retouching tools, you can use the bracket keys (][) to change the size of your brush. Or, if you'd rather change how soft the edge of the brush is, then add the Shift key and you'll be changing the Hardness setting of your brush in 25% increments. Or, if you'd rather access the brush presets palette, then Ctrl-click on your image while any painting or retouching tool is active.

To change the opacity of the currently active tool, use the number keys on your keyboard. Pressing 1 will give you 10%, 3 gives you 30%, 23 will give you 23%, 0 will give you 100% and so on. And if you happen to be in the Move tool while using the number keys, you'll be changing the opacity of the currently active layer. You can even add the Shift key to change the Flow setting of your brush or the Fill Opacity setting of the active layer if you're in the Move tool.

To reset your foreground and background colors to their default colors (black and white), type D, and to swap them, type X. I use those all the time when I'm painting on a Layer Mask.

When I need to scroll around my images, I hold the Spacebar, which temporarily gives me the Hand tool. You can also add the Command key which will temporarily activate the Zoom tool so you can click and drag across the area you'd like to zoom into. To zoom out, just hold down the Command key and then press the Minus key (-).

I don't like to have to constantly look at the Layers palette to change which layer is active, so I instead type V to get to the Move tool and then Command-click on my image. That will make Photoshop look for the topmost layer that contains information below your cursor and it will make it active. Or, if I need to dig a little deeper and make a lower layer active, I'll Ctrl-click when the Move tool is active and it will present me with a list of all the layers that contain information below my cursor.

I often need to fill an area with a color, especially when working on Layer Masks. You can type Option-Delete to fill with your foreground color, or Command-Delete to fill with your background color. Or, if you'd rather access the Edit> Fill dialog box, then type Shift-Delete.

When working with numbers in Photoshop (type sizes, scaling percentages, adjustment settings, etc.), I often click on the number and then use the up and down arrow keys to increase or decrease the setting. Adding Shift to the arrow keys will change the number in larger increments.

Sometimes I like my image to dominate my screen, so I usually type F once or twice to get to one of the full screen modes where my image can slide behind all the palettes and fill my screen. If you're in the second screen mode, where the menu bar is hidden, try typing Shift-F to toggle the visibility of the menu bar.

I often type Command-H to hide something (selection edges, text highlighting, slices for the web, guides, etc.). And when I'm dragging something that starts to snap to things I don't want it to (like dragging a guide near the edge of an image), I'll hold the Ctrl key after I press the mouse button, which temporarily turns off snapping.

Control the Panels in CS3
There are several tricks to controlling the visibility of panels in Adobe's Creative Suite 3 applications. Make sure your cursor isn't in a text frame, and then:
• Press the Tab key to hide all the panels.
• Press Shift-Tab to hide all the panels except the Tools and Options panels.
• Press Option-Command-Tab to collapse panels to their smaller size.
• When panels are hidden, just mouse over their original location to temporarily get access to them. Mouse away from them to hide them again.

Power Nudge
In Adobe applications, you can nudge a selected object or selection by one point by simply pressing the arrow keys on your keyboard. If you hold down the Shift key at the same time, the selection will move by 10 points. To move in one-tenth point increments, hold down Shift and Command.

Photoshop CS4 Photographer's Handbook — New from Rocky Nook
February 18, 2009

Adobe Photoshop is central to almost all photography workflows today. The introduction of CS4 is another milestone in the development of this imaging behemoth. Photographers often feel overwhelmed when starting with Photoshop; the sheer number of tools and options make it difficult for the novice. There is no shortage of instructional books, yet very few direct the user to the most significant aspects of the program in a way that reflects a real workflow.

Working With The Free Transform Menu - Photoshop Tip
February 10, 2009

Jennifer Farley is an Irish designer and instructor based in Dublin. Her blog on Laughing Lion Design features Photoshop tips, tricks and tutorials. Here's a new tip from her:

As you know, in Photoshop you can transform objects in lots of different ways. You can rotate, skew, warp, distort, flip horizontally and vertically. To speed up your workflow, instead of choosing Edit > Transform to see a list of the transformations available, it’s quicker and easier to just select the object you want to transform and then press Ctrl + T (Windows) or Cmd + T (Mac) to kick start the Free Transform.

You’ll see a bounding box appear around the object and if you now Right-Click, you’ll see the full list of transformations that you can apply.

Just like the previous post, these textures were created using public domain images that were taken in the mid 19th century using the Daguerreotype method. I simply removed the subject matter from the images in Photoshop to leave only the textures of the old film. Hope you like ‘em!

Swirls And Mannequins- Free Photoshop Brushes
February 01, 2009

BrushPortfolio.com has just released two new original sets of free, high resolution Photoshop brushes.

The first set is a great collection of swirl brushes. The brushes were made with Illustrator and exported to Photoshop. There are a total of 12 brushes in this set. Each brush was saved at 300 dpi with the smallest brush measuring 1885 pixels so this brush set can be used for a wide variety of projects.

The second set is a series of photographs taken of art mannequin. I have always been fond of those art mannequins and last week I decided that my art mannequin, Leopold, would be a great addition to my Photoshop brush collection. There are 9 brushes in this set measuring from 660 to 2310 pixels. I hope people have as much fun using these brushes as I had making them.

Did You Know You Could Create An Entire Website In Photoshop?
SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites InstantlyThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, SiteGrinder turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, SiteGrinder is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks. Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download.
