Adaptive Wide Angle Filter In Photoshop CS6 Renders Perfect Architectural Lines - Tutorial

Here's a step-by-step tutorial from Mark Galer, ADAPTIVE WIDE ANGLE: New to Photoshop CS6. It shows how the new Adaptive Wide Angle filter in Photoshop CS6 can be used to render perfect architectural lines.
In the image below if I had moved any further back to get everything in a single shot I would have included the power lines, telephone lines and tramlines that are just over my shoulder. Capturing a building so close, however, will inevitably lead to aggressive converging verticals due to a combination of the wide-angle lens and the angle of view required to capture the top of the structure.
If you allow Photoshop’s Photomerge feature to take full automated control of the stitching you will end up with aggressive converging verticals. You can achieve a more professional result by intercepting the automated process to align and blend the images as separate tasks.
Prior to stitching, lens distortions can be easily removed in ACR using the Lens Corrections panel but when the wide-angle images are stitched together and distortions become problematic we can now utilize the power and performance of the new Adaptive Wide Angle filter in Photoshop CS6 to render perfect architectural lines.
Note > Capture images using the horizontal (landscape) format for a vertical panorama.
Optimize the color and tonality of the Raw files in Adobe Camera Raw and then choose Select All and Synchronize before opening. Go to File > Scripts > Load Files into Stack. Select the Open files but do NOT select the Attempt to Automatically Align Source Images option in the dialog. When the files have been loaded into one image select the layer with the subject matter that is closest to the ground (the one with the least amount of converging verticals). Go to the Lock options in the Layers panel and click on the ‘Lock all’ icon to lock this layer.
This action will force Photoshop to respect the perspective of this layer (the other layers will be forced to adopt the perspective of this layer when we align the images). Select all three layers in the Layers panel (Shift-click the top and bottom layers).
Go to File > Edit > Auto-Align Layers. In the dialog select the Perspective option and also select the Lens Correction options. Select OK to process the layers. After the images have been Auto Aligned make sure all three layers are still selected and then go to Edit > Auto-Blend Layers.
Select the ‘Panorama’ and ‘Seamless Tones and Colors’ options and select OK to process the layers. In the Layers panel select only the top layer and unlock this layer before proceeding with the next step.
Select all three layers in the Layers panel again and then go to Filter > Convert for Smart Filters. Select the Crop Tool and crop the image to remove the transparency that surrounds this composite image.
Although we locked the layer with the appropriate perspective (prior to aligning the layers) and selected the Lens Corrections options in the Auto Align Layers dialog there will still be distortion present in the image. This can be corrected using the Adaptive Wide Angle filter.
Go to Filter > Adaptive Wide Angle and select the Panorama option from the Correction menu. Click and drag four horizontal lines across the front of the building, using the Detail window to check for precise alignment.
This will remove the barrel distortion in the horizontal plane of the building.
Hold down the Shift key and extend the four horizontal lines to the edge of the image area. You may need to click and drag more than once on the adjustment points to coax the lines to the edge of the image.
This action will ensure the horizontal distortion is corrected to the edge of the image.
Hold down the Shift key and click and drag to add vertical lines across the front of the building. The vertical lines will appear as a different color to the horizontal lines.
Add a centre line and a line either side of the building to ensure the correction extends to the edge of the image. Hold down the Shift key and then click and drag the lines to extend them to the edge of the image area.
The vertical lines will fully correct the perspective of the building but, in many instance, the perspective will look unnatural. There may be an optical illusion that the building is leaning out towards the top of the image. In this instance it would be appropriate to return a small amount converging perspective to the image.
When you click on a correction line you will see a circle appear. Moving your mouse cursor to the adjustment point on the circle will enable you to tilt the line. You will need to replicate the tilt on all of the vertical lines except the centre line.
After selecting OK in the Adaptive Wide Angle dialog the corrections will be applied to the Smart Object as a smart filter.
This non-destructive approach to the perspective correction allows you to fine-tune any of the filter settings. After the perspective correction there may be an opportunity to fine-tune the crop.
I have completed the edit by add a Curves layer to brighten the image and a Black & White adjustment layer set to Luminosity mode to adjust the luminance values of the blues.
The default setting in the Black & White adjustment layer upsets the standard color values so I am using the ‘ESP-Luminance preset’ that is available from the www.markgaler.com website.
Luminance Preset
The ESP-Luminance preset enables the type of luminance control over the colors that we enjoy in Adobe Camera Raw (the Lightness control in the Hue/Saturation adjustment feature in the main editing space always desaturates colors when adjusting their brightness).
