Better Tools for Tones: Why I Don’t Look at the Histogram

From CreativePro: The histogram is a classic tool for quickly reading the tones in an image. But other tools can tell you exactly where problematic pixels are for any output, and help you craft better-looking images faster. Read the full article at CreativePro. From the intro:
The histogram—the graph of tonal levels you see in photo-editing software—helps you evaluate the tone and color characteristics of an image. But when you think about the reasons why we’re taught to use the histogram, it turns out that newer tools are better at showing you the tonal problems you’ll most want to solve. You find these tools in Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Camera Raw, and Adobe Photoshop Lightroom, and because of them I use the histogram much less than I used to.
Where the Histogram Falls Short
The information the histogram shows is useful, but incomplete. You can’t tell if an image looks good or bad based on the histogram alone, because a histogram that looks technically undesirable might actually be appropriate depending on the image content and your photographic intention. For example, while a histogram with tones primarily on the left side of the graph indicates that the image is very dark and midtones and highlights are rare, if it’s for an image of a nighttime scene then the histogram is completely appropriate. Similarly, while a histogram can show you signs of possible shadow or highlight clipping, the histogram can’t tell you where in the image it’s happening, or if it’s bad enough for you to take action.

Tackling problems commonly encountered in photo editing, Perfect Photo Suite 7.5 includes new Red Eye reduction tools and a Clone Brush that remove common distractions found in photos. The update also includes a new Quick View Browser—which showcases images and effects in a full-screen gallery view—and support for the newly announced Lightroom 5.
Perfect Photo Suite 7.5 will be available to owners of Perfect Photo Suite 7 as a free update. For a limited time, new users may purchase the Premium Edition for $199.95 or the Lightroom & Aperture Edition for $99.95. Owners of previous versions of Perfect Photo Suite can upgrade to the Perfect Photo Suite 7 Premium Edition for $99.95 or the Lightroom & Aperture Edition for $69.95.
Two versions of red eye reduction are available with Perfect Photo Suite 7.5. In Perfect Portrait, red eye reduction is built into the automatic face detection feature. In Perfect Layers, the Red Eye tool is available as a brush, which can be dabbed to remove red eyes caused by flash photography.

Free Photoshop Brushes - Mist Brushes

From Osbdian Dawn: This set of free Photoshop brushes is made up of various types of mist. Ground mist, rising mist, some dense mist, fog, wispy mist, swirling mist, etc. These are all high resolution images, with the average brush size being about 2300 pixels.
Please take note, I’ve started making my brushes for Photoshop CS and above now. I’m just no longer able to continue making them for 7 and up, since getting a program as old as Photoshop 7 to run on my Mac is very difficult without a LOT of extra steps.

Radial Filter: Apply any of Lightroom’s local adjustment attributes to a circular mask. The area of the mask can be resized, feathered or even inverted to give you maximum control over the focus of your images.
Upright: Automatically level horizons, straighten buildings, and correct other askew lines.
Smart Preview: Lightroom allows you to edit offline images by storing a smaller version of the original image, called a smart preview. Edits made to the smart preview will automatically apply to the original once reconnected to Lightroom.

Adobe Camera Raw 7.4 Full Release Available For Download
APRIL 01, 2013
Camera Raw 7.4 is now available as a final release through the update mechanism in Photoshop CS6. The goal of this release is to provide additional camera raw support, lens profile support and address bugs that were introduced in previous releases of Camera Raw. Customers of previous versions of Photoshop can utilize DNG Converter 7.4 for raw file support for newly added cameras (click here, find upate at top right of page). Here are some of the new updates:
1 - Added raw file format support for 25 cameras including the Canon EOS 1D C and Nikon D7100
2 - Bug fixes for issues introduced in previous versions of ACR
3 - Updated the imaging algorithm for Fuji X-Trans sensor. This should improve the default raw file support for X-Trans cameras such as the Fuji X-Pro1 and Fuji X-E1.

Adobe Photoshop CS6 (free trial) includes a variety of tools and commands for improving the quality of photos. This lesson, Basic Photo Corrections in Adobe Photoshop CS6, steps you through the process of acquiring, resizing, and retouching a photo intended for a print layout. The same basic workflow applies to web images. In this lesson, you’ll learn how to do the following:
Understand image resolution and size.
Open and edit an image in Camera Raw.
Adjust the tonal range of an image.
Straighten and crop an image.
Paint over a color with the Color Replacement tool.
Adjust the saturation of isolated areas of an image using the Sponge tool.
Use the Clone Stamp tool to eliminate an unwanted part of an image.
Use the Spot Healing Brush tool to repair part of an image.
Use the content-aware Patch tool to remove blemishes.

How To Do Macro Photography With Deep Depth of Field

From CreativePro, Macro Photography with Deep Depth of Field by Ben Long. From the intro: Macro photography—the process of shooting extreme close-ups of things—has been popular for as long as there have been cameras.
But as you might expect, digital technology, both hardware and software, has made it possible to shoot macro photographs that would have been impossible to achieve with film. And one of the most important macro-related innovations has to do with depth of field. Technically, a macro photo is one that captures your image at a 1:1 scale. That is, the size of the object on your image sensor is actual size. (Going to higher magnifications is also considered macro, of course.)
To shoot a macro photo, you need a lens that’s capable of focusing close enough to your subject that you can achieve this 1:1 or better size. With most lenses, if you’re close enough to your subject to get macro scale, you’re too close to actually focus the shot. Macro lenses, therefore, are capable of focusing at incredibly short distances.
As you get closer to your subject, though, your depth of field drops off tremendously. For example, when shooting with a 1x macro lens at f/4, your depth of field will probably be around half a millimeter! Read the full article: Macro Photography with Deep Depth of Field by Ben Long.

Responsive design is an approach to web design that adjusts to the user, from varying browser sizes to changes in device. The concept has been around for a few years, but 2013 is the year responsive design is really expected to have a huge affect as it is implemented on an exponentially growing number of sites. So what do you need to know about responsive design? This article covers ten important concepts.
Responsive websites work by using media queries to detect the device or the resolution of the device being used to access them. Once this determination has been made, a combination of flexible images, type, and grids adjust to fit the screen on which the site is being viewed. Responsive design is popular now because of the number of tablets and smartphones in the market. The number of users accessing the Internet via a device other than a desktop computer is rapidly increasing, making it necessary for developers to think about all the different ways their information is being viewed.
