TEXTURA - Original Photoshop Textures By Vered
TEXTURA is an amazing site that features the work of texture artist Vered, who created everything using Photoshop. The texture work is beautiful and inspires us. As soon as you load her site you'll see some of the nice smudgy, charcoal and pastel work she's known for.

Photoshop Resources - free textures and backgroundsAt the site, on the right hand navigation area use the scrollers to dig down and pretty soon the previews to the textures (small squares) will appear. There are about 50 textures available that are listed by upload date. All of them are quite beautiful, are free, and are ready for download. The texture files are high resolution and feature exquisite color schemes and patterns.

Vered has also posted a thorough How To Create Textures In Photoshop tutorial that will help you create your own textures and backgrounds — if you'd like to give that a try.

Citrus Moon Patterns — Free Patterns and Background Tiles
You'll find some very beautiful free patterns here for making tiling backgrounds. Start on the Patterns Page and you'll see a list of categories that include: Arrays, black & white, blue, brown / beige, busy, dark, deco /nouveau, Floral, green, grey, House Party, Ménage à trois, metallic hues, multicolor, Multicolor, Neutral, nice couples, Op, orange, peach, pink, purple, red, retro, rust, silk, Tame, U-Color 'em, and yellow.

Photoshop Resources - free textures and backgroundsThen try Overalls, which is a collection of semi-transparent tiles that will work over many different background colors. If you hit the "latest" button you'll be taken to the end of the line, and then you can use the left arrow to step your way to the beginning.

But there's something else here that is truly amazing. Just below the Terms Of Use notice you'll see an assortment of color squares. All you have to do is pass your mouse over a color and you'll suddenly see the tile you selected against that sample color. This is a huge time-saver, and a lot of fun.

If you'd like to learn about making your own patterns, read A Tip Or Two On Making Patterns by taz, which includes links to useful resources.

To make your own "OverAlls" (semi-transparent tiles) read the 30 Second OverAlls Tutorial which walks you through every step.
