Lens Effects simulates a variety of camera filter and lens effects that you can virtually apply to your image. These effects are used to correct or enhance characteristics of your image. Diffusion

Camera – Diffusion simulates characteristics like those seen with Diffusion filters (also called a softening filter) This allows you to soften and spread out light throughout your image. This is most often used for portraits. It is used to create a hazy or dream-like effect.

Dual Tone

Filter – Dual Tone simulates color tone filters that can be applied to 2 areas in your image – allowing you to add, subtract, correct or enhance color. You can select the color tone and then set the intensity (or strength of the applied color), the transition and angle that it is applied to your image. This is a great way to balance color in your image or to create color effects.

Fog

Filter – Fog simulates a physical fog filter and a graduated fog filter, allowing you to create anoverall soft focus effect. Fog filters can be used as a portrait filter or to create the romantic and mysterious effect.

Graduated Color

Filter – Graduated Color creates an effect similar to that of a graduated color filter, which blends a color into a portion of your image using a gradual transition. You can select your color and the set the transition application characteristics: transition, positioning and region size. The color will gradually fade out so the boundary between the colored and transparent sections will not be apparent.

Graduated Neutral Density

Filer – Graduated Neutral Density simulates a GND filter which helps reduce the amount of light without affecting the color. It is used for exposure balance, depth-of-field control, controlling overly bright or washed out images and balancing out bright skies against darker foregrounds.

Polarization

Filter – Polarization filters out light with a particular direction of polarisation. Helps reduce reflections from non-metallic surfaces – like water and shine in foliage. It can darken skies and increase saturation.

Reflector – Silver

Filter – Reflector simulates a traditional gold or silver reflector, used to redirect light towards a given subject or scene. Gold adds a warm light to shadows and silver adds a more neutral light.

UV/Haze

Filter – UV/Haze allows you to reduce UV and eliminate haze from your image.

Cool Tone

Filter – Cool Tone allows you to change the color temperature in your image. Lowering the Temperature adjustment will give your image a cool tint.

Warm Tone

Filter – Warmth allows you to change the color temperature in your image. Increasing the Temperature adjustment will give your image a warm tint.

Streak

Filter – Streak creates motion in your image for a streaked or creative blur type of effect. It can also create ghost-like effects.

Effects & Presets
As in most of our other programs, Lens Effects also includes default presets to help you get started. However, you will also notice that Lens Effects introduces a new category called: Effects. The Effects category organizes your all of your presets. Each Effect features a set of its own presets that can be applied to your image. During your workflow you can select the type of effect that you want and then choose from one of the included presets in that category. You can also stack effects and presets using the new “Apply button” - without having to save your changes and then re-enter the program to add additional effects to your image.

Smart Brush
Topaz Lens Effects also includes new smart brush techology, designed to help you easily and effectively achieve selective adjustments during your workflow. When creating bokeh effects you will use the Smart Brush to create depth maps - allowing you to select any focal point within your image and put the emphasis where you want it. Darker tones will make painted objects nearer and lighter tones will add more depth by making painted objects seem further away.

Depth-Map
The depth maps feature is accessible when you choose Bokeh SLR or Bokeh Selective from the Effects menu.



Topaz Lens Effects Plugin - Sample Project
In this project, we will walk you through a quick example workflow to help you get acquainted with the tools and setup of the new Topaz Lens Effects

1. Open your image in Photoshop (or another compatible host program) and go to Filters -> Topaz Labs -> Lens Effects.

2. Once your image loads, use the zoom tools to zoom in on a specific part of your image. Then you can click on the preview and drag it around until you find an area that you like.

3. Go to your Effects / Presets panel on the left side of the screen and select Bokeh - Center Focus from the Effects Menu.

You will notice in the Presets menu (below Effects) that the default bokeh presets pop up, and that the tools in your tools panel on the right side of your screen also change accordingly.



4. Select a preset and click on it to apply. Be sure to scroll through each preset to see which one will work as a good starting point for your image. (Don’t worry if your subject looks out of focus... we will change that next.

When fist getting intoTopaz Lens Effects you may want to explore all of the effects and their associated presets before jumping into the workflow. This will give you a better idea of the various effects that you can create.



You are welcome to select any preset you’d like...or you can skip the presets and work solely with the sliders.

5. Go to the Bokeh Adjustments and click on the Effect Center button. You will see a small plus sign that will allow you to click on your image in the preview window to set the effect center - your applied blur should shift after resetting the Effect Center.



6. Adjust the blur slider to apply the desired amount of blur to your image.

7. Adjust the Focus Width and Focus Height sliders. Theses sliders adjust the horizontal and vertical span (respectively) of the applied blur in your image. A higher value will include more focused area (from your Effect Center) whereas a smaller value will include less focus and more blur.

8. Adjust the Transition slider to change the hardness of the transition between the in-focus and out-of-focus areas of your image. A smaller value will give your a harder, more visible transition. A higher value will give you a softer more diffused transition.

Be sure to use the Original and Preview buttons to see your before and after for comparison. You can also use the spacebar shortcut key.

9. Go to the Lens Characteristics tab. Here you can make changes to the aperture shape and rotation of the bokeh highlights in your image. You can also adjust the intensity of the highlights and control chromatic aberration cast from those highlights.



You can change the center focus in your image at anytime by clicking the Effect Center button and then selecting the desired area on your image.

Once you are happy with your Bokeh Adjustments and Lens Characteristic Adjustments you can either click OK to process your image or you can click Apply to add more effects.



So, for example, you may want to boost the saturation in your image just a bit. Go ahead and click the Apply button. You will see the progress bar at the bottom of the screen move as your changes are being processed. After that, go back to your Effects menu and select the xF - Add Adjustment option. This will bring up some default presets for additional enhancements you can add. You can go to your Image Adjustments tab on the right side of the interface to have more control and manually adjust the additional image adjustments to be added.

After making your adjustments here in the Add Adjustment option, you can click “Apply” to save these changes and then add more. Or if you are completely finished with your image and are happy with your adjustments you can click OK and watch your image transform.

xF stands for additional function. You can add these effects to your image and stack them any way you’d like using the “Apply” button.
