Camera Raw updated to 4.3.1; LR to follow
Photoshop's Camera Raw plug-in has been updated to version 4.3.1 to address two problems discovered following the release of v4.3 a couple of weeks ago:
- Compressed raw files from the Nikon D100 were read incorrectly in Camera Raw 4.3.
- A possible artifact in Camera Raw 4.3 raw file support for the Olympus E-3 has been corrected.
The same fixes plus a few others are slated for inclusion in Lightroom 1.3.1, due shortly.
SlideShowPro Flash gallery comes to Lightroom
I'm glad to report that Dominey Design's excellent SlideShowPro Flash gallery is now available for Lightroom. As the site notes, you can "change any of SlideShowPro's 60+ parameters and preview your changes inside a real, working preview of SlideShowPro before you publish." The gallery offers a slick full-screen viewing option (click the icon in the lower right corner of the example here). From within the Lightroom Web module you can upload directly to the Web server of your choice. You can also upload to Dominey's SlideShowPro Director hosting service, which offers online tools for browsing and managing your uploaded library. The gallery costs $25, and hosting is available at various rates (free for 14 days).

A Suggested Alternative Lightroom Workflow
(Ken Milburn) Ideally, most of us preach that you should organize your Lightroom workflow along the lines of the order in which the Lightroom modules appear. So you should start in the by adding the metadata and keywords, delete the images that will never have any value. My workflow may not be suited to everyone. A lot of what works for you depends on the type of work that comprises the bulk of your shooting and on the personal habits that make you most comfortable. Just so you know, most of my work these days consists of beauty shots that I submit to stock agencies.
Adobe Lightroom 1.3 vs. Adobe Camera RAW 4.3.1 (George Mann) As most of you probably know by now, a few days ago Adobe released ACR 4.3.1. In the release notes it mentioned that there was an update for the new Nikon D300 and Nikon D3 cameras (among other things). The appearance of a new ACR gives me an opportunity to run some more comparison tests, this time between Lightroom 1.3 (with the old 4.3 ACR) and Adobe Photoshop CS3 with the new and improved ACR 4.3.1.

(Ken Milburn) Lightroom has a new “feature” in release 1.3 that I’ve not yet heard anyone mention: When you ship your image over to Photoshop to do the things that Lightroom can’t, then bring the image back into Lightroom, it’s no longer two or three stops brighter than it was before it left. There’s another “new” development in Lightroom 1.3. I have “new” in quotes because it’s been lingering in the background for a while now, but there are actually downloadable “next-gen” Web gallery templates that you can try.

Some months back before the latest iMacs were released I was musing as to what a black iMac might look like. Being a Photoshopper, I decided to try making one. After posting it on a blog the image went viral and started appearing on Mac and technology blogs and my site was inundated with traffic. Today if you look up Black iMac in a Google search you’ll see lots of sites using my image. Today I’ll show you how I made that picture.

Tutorial: Extracting Images in Photoshop
Normally, I’m a painter, however now and then I do some graphic design and have to do some photo-manipulation. One of the things that separates a good photo manip from a bad one is how cleanly the image was extracted from the original photo before being inserted into the new one. In Photoshop there are several ways to do this. You can select things painstakingly with the lasso tool. You can carefully erase or mask around the image. Or, if you’re aware of it, you can let Photoshop do most of the work for you.

Photoshop Fundamentals: The Clone Stamp Tool
Scanning your prints or negatives is a great way to convert existing pictures into digital, but sometimes during the process you pick up a few unwanted dust marks as well as the picture details. Called the Clone Stamp tool (or sometimes the Rubber Stamp tool), the feature selects and samples an area of your picture and then uses these pixels to paint over the offending marks. It takes a little getting used to, but as your confidence grows so too will the quality of your repairs and changes.
