Adobe To Take A Free Version Of Photoshop Online
February 28, 2007

Martin LaMonica and Mike Ricciuti at CNET News.com have posted the following:

Adobe Photoshop Blog | PhotoshopSupport.comHoping to get a jump on Google and other competitors, Adobe Systems plans to release a hosted version of its popular Photoshop image-editing application within six months, the company's chief executive said Tuesday.

The online service is part of a larger move to introduce ad-supported online services to complement its existing products and broaden the company reach into the consumer market, Adobe CEO Bruce Chizen told CNET News.com.

Chizen said Adobe laid the foundation for a hosted Photoshop product with Adobe Remix, a Web-based video-editing tool it offers through the PhotoBucket media-sharing site.

Like Adobe Remix, the hosted Photoshop service is set to be free and marketed as an entry-level version of Adobe's more sophisticated image-editing tools, including Photoshop and Photoshop Elements. Chizen envisions revenue from the Photoshop service coming from online advertising.

"That is new (for Adobe). It's something we are sensitive to because we are watching folks like Google do it in different categories, and we want to make sure that we are there before they are, in areas of our franchises," Chizen said.

Chizen described the introduction of Adobe Remix and the forthcoming hosted Photoshop as part of a larger move toward integrating hosted services into the company's product mix.

Color Theory Fundamentals for Digital Photography
February 28, 2007

In the mood for a nice long tutorial on color theory fundamentals for digital photography? I thought so, and I've got just the thing — a good comprehensive piece by Chris Rutter from the graphics.com site. Here's the intro:

It is easy to take color for granted; after all, it is how we see the world every day. But color plays such an integral part in our emotions and in our perception of a scene that knowledge of the nature of color and how to capture it in your images will give impact and expression to your photography.

Adobe Photoshop Blog | PhotoshopSupport.comPainters and designers learn how color can be used to their advantage at a very early stage, but for most photographers learning about this issue is often a question of trial and error. Traditionally, this has been because photography did not offer the same artistic license as other visual media. Simply capturing the world around them meant that there seemed little point in photographers learning how to mix colors and use color contrasts. However, digital photography has opened up a whole new world of creative possibilities, by offering everyone the opportunity to create their own vision of the world around them, including the ability to adjust or even to change colors.

Adobe Photoshop Blog | PhotoshopSupport.comTraditionalists may not hold with this level of manipulation, but does anyone object to black-and-white photography? That is surely the greatest manipulation of all, and it has been at the heart of photography since its very beginning. Even capturing images on color film is not a pure recording medium. Film does not “see” light in the same way as we do; as soon as you press the shutter you are manipulating reality, so make the most of it and use color to your advantage.

The difference between these two images (on the right) is simple: one is mainly orange and one mainly blue. However, the difference in the overall feel of the two is marked. The orange image is welcoming and warm. In the blue image, the whole scene looks cold and uninviting. Why these colors cause such differing emotions is largely psychological. The ability to measure the color differences and manipulate them allows us to capture more than a simple representation of a scene; it allows us to create a more personal view of the world.

February 27, 2007

Adobe Lightroom Info - Adobe Debuts Photoshop Lightroom 1.0For a limited time only, Adobe is offering Lightroom 1.0 for a special introductory price of only US $199. And I've just started to notice that Adobe is now offering some special discounts on Adobe Lightroom at their Adobe Australia Store, their Adobe UK Store, and their Adobe Europe Store.

At the Adobe UK Store I found this message:
"Get Lightroom before April 30, 2007 and save £50 off the expected retail price of £175 (ex VAT)."

At the Adobe Australia Store I found this:
"Customer Appreciation - Get Lightroom before April 30, 2007 and save AU$150 off the expected retail price."

At the Adobe Europe Store there's a dropdown menu on the right where you choose your country. Try that and see if there are specials for you. I saw one for Germany, that's for sure, and there are probably more special offers for other countries. You'll have to explore!

Here is a list of direct links to all of the above-mentioned Adobe Stores:

SiteGrinder Photoshop Plugin - Create Websites Instantly

Media Lab Release SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProThere often seems to be a strict division of labor within the world of web design and development. Creative professionals tend to stick to the Photoshop domain, while those well-versed in scripting are left to the task of implementing their work. Indeed, the two realms are quite different from each other, to which any of us even vaguely familiar with either can easily attest.

Essentially, Photoshop is a no-holds-barred design studio, offering the artist a seemingly endless array of creative options. On the other hand, HTML, CSS, Java and the like follow strict rules of engagement, requiring the developer to take any number of esoteric concerns into consideration in order to ensure that designs are properly displayed on the web.

Turn Photoshop Into A Complete Web Design Tool
SiteGrinder seeks to bridge this gap between design and development. Basically, this program turns Photoshop into an easy-to-use and fully functional web design tool. With SiteGrinder, designers will now have the freedom to totally let their creativity loose and then, without skipping a beat, transfer their designs to the web. Bringing esthetic concerns together with more practical considerations, this program is an amazingly powerful tool that would make a fantastic addition to any web designer's bag of tricks.

SiteGrinder Basic and SiteGrinder ProGenerate Your Web Pages Directly From Photoshop
By generating web pages directly from Photoshop, you'll be able to spend much more time on the creative end of the spectrum, since you'll know right off the bat how well particular designs will translate to the web. No more going back to the Photoshop drawing board after getting a phone call from your development team, telling you that what you had envisioned doesn't have a chance of being displayed on the web. You can immediately visually and interactively test your designs, which permits you to then make changes to either esthetics or functions while it's still relatively early on in the design process.

Pricing and Availability
Mac OS X and Windows versions of the SiteGrinder unlockable demo are available now via download. SiteGrinder can be ordered from Media Lab's online store.
