Adobe Photoshop CS6: Learn by Video - Master the Fundamentals - 6 Free Video Tutorials
May 30, 2012
Here are 6 free videos from the new course, Adobe Photoshop CS6: Learn by Video - Master the Fundamentals. In this Learn by Video course (created in partnership with Peachpit Press), Adobe Certified Expert Kelly McCathran covers every aspect of working in Photoshop CS6, from basic concepts to advanced techniques. (If you don't have PS CS6 you can follow along by downloading a free 30-day trial of Photoshop CS6.)
Removing Unwanted Objects with Content-Aware Fill
There are often one or two details in a photograph that you would like to remove. Photoshop's Content-Aware Fill makes this easier than ever. No cloning stamp required.
Customizing Keyboard Shortcuts
One of the best ways that you can improve your efficiency in Photoshop is by using keyboard shortcuts. In this video you'll learn how to change any keyboard shortcut and even add a keyboard shortcut for a menu item that doesn't have one.
Selections: The Lasso and Polygonal Lasso Tools
To make freeform or straight-edge selections, you will need to get comfortable with the Lasso and Polygonal Lasso tools. In this video you'll see how to do some subtle color correction by lassoing a selection and how to drop in a new background that blends using feathering.
Layer Masks, the Key to Flawless Retouching
Creating a mask hides a portion of an image without ever erasing the image data. Layer masks are used for hundreds of tasks, and in this video you will see how to create a popular effect: converting the background to black-and-white while leaving one object in color.
Cropping in Adobe Camera Raw
Not only can Adobe Camera Raw crop your images, it can also apply a beautiful burnt corner effect called "post-crop vignetting." In this video you'll see how to use this effect to give your photos a little something extra.
Blurring for Focus or Optical Illusion
Iris Blur, Tilt Shift Blur, and Field Blur have been radically improved in Photoshop CS6. If you've never used these filters before, check out this video to see how to create radial depth of field and an optical illusion of miniature.

Eyedropper Tool Tips - Photoshop Tips And Tricks
May 28, 2012
Here's a tutorial on using the eyedropper tool from Photoshop Daily: How to sample an "average" colour for a blend of the surrounding hues using the Eyedropper tool in Photoshop (download a free trial of Photoshop CS6 Extended).
Set Size
The colours in a gradient can be sampled by creating an average. The options for Sample Size go from 3 by 3 Average to 101 by 101 Average in Photoshop, and in Elements you have two choices: 3 by 3 Average or 5 by 5 Average.
Sample Gradients
Selecting a larger Sample Size and the Eyedropper tool takes into account more pixels in any given area. If you’re looking to sample a colour from a sunset’s sky to paint with for example, 11 by 11 Average should give good results.
Pick An Average
Imagine a small square box under the cursor, exactly 11 by 11 wide and high. Any colour clicked on will be an average reading of all colours in this invisible area. The new readout will appear in your Foreground swatch ready to use. Hold Opt/Alt to alternate between sampling colour for the Foreground and Background swatches.

Create A Digital Bokeh Effect With Hexagons In Photoshop
May 27, 2012
Found a nice tutorial from Abduzeedo on creating a digital bokeh effect with hexagons: In 2008 I came up with a technique using the Brush Tool in Photoshop to create a digital bokeh effect. Then I mixed it with some gradient colors blended all together. The effect has become quite popular so I decided to upgrade a little bit the effect. So in this tutorial I will show you how to create a digital bokeh effect with hexagons. We will use the brush engine, patterns, blend modes and basic filters to achieve this effect. Inverting Facial Features In Photoshop - HD Video Tutorial
May 24, 2012
When I first watched this week's free Deke’s Techniques video, I was mesmerized by the way Deke inverted a portrait but left the eyes and mouth in the right-side up position. ‘Mesmerized’ might be a euphemism, because, really, I was sort of spellbound by the fact that I couldn’t immediately imagine why anyone would want to perpetrate this bizarre effect. Check it out for yourself in the free video tutorial, then read on. Arguably, at first, the inverted portrait on the right looks almost normal, even though we know in our human hearts (and eyes, and optical information processing centers) that something is wrong:
But when you flip the entire composition, you realize just how wrong the altered face (now on the left, in case it’s not disturbingly obvious) actually is:
The truth is, that this is a great demonstration of how our eyes and expectations force us into reconciling a confusingly hard to pin down, altered portrait. More importantly, in the process of flipping the model while restoring the eyes and mouth to their original orientation, you can learn a great deal about creating impeccable Photoshop compositions, including how to tackle duplicated transformations, careful masking, and selective healing. You can also, should you choose, learn to create a flipped portrait that is truly unsettling.
In the end we have a portrait that’s more disturbing than it initially seems, and a technique that’s more grounded in solid Photoshop practices than one might initially suspect—ultimately, it’s a party trick that teaches solid Photoshop machinations.

How To Create Glamor Glow Effects In Photoshop - Tutorial
May 21, 2012
Here's a tutorial from Photoshop Daily on how to get a good glamor glow effect in Photoshop
(download a free trial of Photoshop CS6 Extended).
Glamour glow is a retouch effect often used in commercial photography, usually in model shots, but sometimes in wedding photography. So, when producing this effect you’ll want to get it just right. Believe us when we say that you can certainly over and under-cook this effect, with great detriment to your final image. The secret is applying just enough blur in an image to soften features but still recognise shape and edge detail in the facial regions.
This effect is best applied through Filter>Blur>Gaussian Blur. First you really should target skin areas in a duplicate layer (tutorial), which is set to Soft Light, and apply a Layer Mask to this selection. Only then can you apply your filter.
Gaussian Blur settings will depend on the size and resolution of your image. To improve the effect further target the same skin selection and apply a Vibrancy adjustment layer on top, decreasing the Vibrancy slider to soften colour intensity, tweaking the Saturation slider for a warm or cool colour tonality.

How To Manually Target Skin Selections In Photoshop - Tutorial
May 21, 2012
Here's a Photoshop tutorial from Photoshop Daily on how to maunally traget skin selections.
Manually targeting skin is essential for numerous applications like smoothing skin, localising tonal changes and applying glamour glow effects. If you get your hands on a copy of Photoshop CS6 then this becomes simple with the new Skin Tones option (download a free trial of Photoshop CS6 Extended). However, some of us will be using pre-existing Photoshop versions and will need to apply effects manually. Here’s how.
Activate a Marquee tool and Ctrl/right-click your image, selecting Color Range from your options. Use the Add to sample (+) Color Picker to pick out skin tones, editing selections with the Fuzziness slider. Now choose Select>Save Selection. This will save your selection to a new Alpha channel in your Channels palette. White determines the selection area, black being unaffected. Personalise selection areas with the Burn/Dodge tools. Now all you have to do is Cmd/Ctrl-click this channel’s thumbnail to activate an exact skin selection and apply effects.

Use Levels In Photoshop To Improve Contrast And Color Balance
May 15, 2012
Here's a tip from Simon Skellon at Photoshop Daily: The Levels adjustment layer in Photoshop (download a free trial of Photoshop Extended) is a versatile one. It can not only be used to improve the lighting in an image but also perform colour balancing.
Inside Levels, change the Channel option from RGB to Red. Align the black point on the left so that it lines up with start of the graph.
Align the white point on the right to align with the end of graph. The third adjustment needs to be made to the middle point on the graph. Bring this more towards the centre between the other two points, and around areas where the graph peaks.
Repeat this process for both the Green and Blue Channels and you should see a dramatic improvement to the colour balance of your image.

How To Place A Circular Path In Illustrator CS6 - Video Tutorial
May 13, 2012
This week's free Deke's Techniques is the first recorded in Illustrator CS6 (try a 30-day trial), but aside from the new dark interface atmosphere, there’s nothing in this technique that can’t be done in earlier versions of Illustrator. Which is to say, placing type on the top and bottom of what appears to be the same circle still requires some finesse, even in this era of Illustrator CS6. In today’s tutorial, Deke will show you exactly how it works.
This technique is ultimately a matter of understanding how to stack two different circles, using the alignment setting and Smart Guides to your advantage, and then adjusting the scale and tracking of the text to finish the effect. The result is type placed on a circular path, with the center of each letter aligned, like you see in this fiercely aligned logo:

New Color Lookup Adjustment Layers - Photoshop CS6
May 13, 2012
From Adobe Digital Imaging Evangelist Julieanne Kost's blog: The new Color Lookup Adjustment Layer in Photoshop CS 6 (try a 30-day trial of Photoshop CS6 Extended) has several options (3DLUT File, Abstract, and Device Link) that are used to load different “looks”. These looks are achieved by remapping every color in the image to a different one using a lookup table (LUT). I think that many photographers and designers will find their resulting color shifts quite interesting.
Note: historically, LUTs have been used primarily by the film industry as they’re an excellent way to apply color adjustments from one application in another application that may not share the same math.
Here are some examples of the LUTs that Chris Cox included in Photoshop CS6. You can think of these tables as a sort of meta-adjustment, a way to apply pre-packaged adjustments (sometimes lots of adjustments together) in one step.

Skin Retouching Tips From Mark Galer - Photoshop CS4 Tutorial
May 04, 2012
A fellow photographer was showing me some images the other day that he had captured with a camera that uses a plastic lens. The images had a certain attraction.
Although the images had some pretty shocking vignetting and heavy distortion he was drawn to the beautiful liquid smooth tones that the plastic lens was offering up. Most women who look at photographs of themselves would agree that crunchy detail is just not a good look.
A digital camera can be a very cruel tool that can capture way too much information. Most people would prefer their skin to appear smooth, but not featureless, and will thank the photographer when they can reveal a skin texture that does not shout its detail to the viewer.
The craft of professional skin retouching is the ability to render perfect skin without giving your model the appearance of a plastic-fantastic shop window mannequin. READ FULL TUTORIAL.

Hidden Power of Blend Modes in Photoshop - 3 Book Excerpts
May 03, 2012
Here are three book exceprts from Hidden Power of Blend Modes in Adobe Photoshop.
General Techniques
This excerpt familiarizes you with the basics of blend modes. A main goal of this book is to become so familiar with blend modes that you no longer need to “try it and see,” even though that is a valid approach, especially when you are not sure exactly which look or effect you want. To get started, however, you need to know some general methods for working with blend modes, along with some basic facts.
Removing Vignetting
In this excerpt Scott Valentine shares a handy method to realize some basic recovery using the Divide blend mode. It also leaves you some creative latitude for additional effects, but it does have some limitations.
Photographic Effects and Compositing
In this excerpt from The Hidden Power of Photoshop Blend Modes, Scott Valentine shows how to synthesize gentle rain and customize a halftone effect.
About The Book
This definitive resource on using Adobe Photoshop blend modes, Hidden Power of Blend Modes in Adobe Photoshop features dozens of hands-on examples to give you an edge in technical, personal, and commercial projects. Blend modes are an essential, if somewhat mysterious, tool for photographers and digital artists. They can be used to for a wide range of imaging effects and challenges, such as noise reduction, working with high dynamic range (HDR) images, compositing, graphic design, and digital painting. Although blend modes can be easy to use, they aren’t always easy to understand. Scott Valentine translates the technical elements into every day language and demonstrates techniques using real-world examples.

Feathering selections can improve the quality of work you perform based on selections, but in this lesson you'll see why you're probably better off not feathering your selections.
Selection Tools — The Quick Selection Tool
The Quick Selection tool often lives up to its name, enabling you to create even challenging selections quickly and easily.

The individual color channels for an image contain color information, but that information can also be used to create a selection with surprising power, as you'll see in this lesson.
Creating Composite Images — Unlinking Image and Mask
When you want to be able to move an image around within the confines of a layer mask, you'll need to unlink the image and layer mask, as you'll see in this lesson.

Change The Opacity of Masks Using The Levels Adjustment - Tip
May 02, 2012
Here's a good tip from Photoshop Daily for fading layer masks in Photoshop: Layer masks help us hide parts of an image from an adjustment, but here’s a little trick that means you can lower the opacity of a mask rather than reducing what’s on the layer.
Select the mask’s thumbnail and head to Image>Adjustments>Levels (or simply press Ctrl/Cmd+L). In here, the Output Levels can be shift inwards to affect the blacks and whites of a mask. To lower the Opacity of the black areas of a mask, push the black marker inwards. The opposite effect will happen if the white marker is pushed inwards. The mask in the Layers palette should fade to bring through more or less of the content from the layer.

How To Create A Reflecting Type In Water Effect - Photoshop HD Video Tutorial
May 02, 2012
In this week’s free Deke’s Techniques movie, Deke shows you how to make a text reflection appear in rippled water. You’ll start with this miraculously floating text set on top of a photo of gently moving water:
Next, Deke shows you how to create a base reflection by turning the text layer into a Smart Object, copying it, then using the Free Transform command to stretch the copy out and invert it. Then the real magic of this technique happens when Deke shows you how to create a displacement map from the water’s ripples, and how that map can be applied to the reflected letters.
In order to ensure that the effect edges are smooth and believable, and that the letters get aligned correctly with the feet of the original text, you’ll need to pay close attention to the fairly sophisticated way Deke goes about building the displacement map in the free video. The end result is this study in serenity:
You can get a free 7-day trial to the lynda.com Online Training Library. The trial membership will give you access to every course in the lynda.com Online Training Library for free.
